Good ole mom stopped by Thursday with a nipple shield. She says "try this" for non-latching on problems. So, we tried, and low and behold it worked! What a relief, what a feeling of well being. I called our lactation consultant and she explained that these types of devices usually decrease milk supply, so I need to keep pumping. Relief and well being, crushed and out the door. Well, things have been pretty good until last night. I put off pumping for almost two days, but last night pumped, and she was right: milk supply is not what it was on Saturday. Damn! Back to feeding and then pumping. I think Niles has a little cold too, because last night he wouldn't feed at all from me, and you could hear him struggling to breathe. We have a doctor's appointment tomorrow with lots of questions and concerns to bring up. Maybe I am paranoid because I am a first time mom, but I'd rather raise the questions and have the doctor reassure me that everything is fine, then not say anything at all.
I also want to thank you women out there that have had continuous words of encouragement, it really does help me to get through these tough times, and I do know it will get better. I'm still holding strong to the "small steps, small goals" mantra.
Above is the most recent picture of Niles sleeping in his bassinet. He has to have his arms out, just like daddy.
